The Architectural Awards of Excellence Competition was given to "New England Vacation
House" in 1987 by the American Institute of Steel Construction. AISC’s Architectural Awards of
Excellence are presented biennially, and since their inauguration in 1960 have become the most
prestigious in the construction industry. The competition recognizes outstanding steel-framed
buildings of all types, many of which are now considered benchmarks to the state-of-the-art, and
landmarks in their own locale.
Prin A. Allen & Sons was the General Contractor on this project.

Showcased Homes
Maine Home + Design magazine
Self Contained Living... from cargo ship to container house. This home was constructed from
twelve industrial shipping containers, the home is anything but tradition or expected, and yet the
Adriance home somehow seems entirely in harmony with the rugged, rocky coastline. Working
with the steel shipping containers requires skills more often found in commercial construction,
so Kalkin contracted Sheridan Corporation, one of Maine’s largest commercial builders to install
and weld the metal containers. Then the Brooklin-based construction firm, Prin A. Allen & Sons,
Inc., completed the finish work. This house is "the frosting on the cake – marrying a modern,
utilitarian design to an old Downeast setting". January/February 2010 edition.

Maine Award- Winner is Oil Heated
One of the winners in the 1994 Custom Builder magazine Custom Home of the Year Awards is
a 6, 354 sq. ft. oceanfront "cottage" in Stonington, Maine, which is heated with oil. The family
retreat, which was intended "strictly for summer use" was constructed for year-round living,
eventually perhaps as a retirement home, according to Michael P. Allen, a partner in Prin A.
Allen & Sons Inc. Custom Builder cited this home for its architectural exterior detailing.
May 1994 edition.
